SYNOPSIS:
A young woman writer is intrigued by old photographs, which spark her imagination to create a story from the images collected before her. As she writes, we see the story that she weaves unfold on the screen...
It is in the late 1920's somewhere in Northern California. Dr. Edward Spears, a psychiatrist, has the responsibility of raising his two nieces, Caroline and Gina after the death of their parents. As they are reaching adulthood, he has less and less control of them, and they spend hours in their private rituals in which they try to evoke Indian "spirits."
When Caroline is seen on the roof of her school dormitory in one of her ritual dances, Edward decides to put them in the custody of the mysterious Mrs. E., to avoid further scandal. The girls are frightened, and before the are sent off, they decide to run away at night into the hills, to live with some kind of beings that Caroline is convinced exist somewhere in the wilderness.
In the morning, Edward finds them missing, and decides to go out after them with a friend and a tracker.
What ensues is a spiritual journey through the landscape, as they pass through forests, hills, and rocky cascades&emdash; and the spirits appear-To Caroline. Edward is haunted by dreams of his dead brother, and his own feelings of inadequacy, but the experience of the wilderness allows him to heal through his own visions, and through the insightful comments of the wise old tracker. Caroline is being led by her visions&emdash; and everyone else is being led by Caroline.
In a surprising twist, Caroline finds her spiritual guide as they are led to the country house of the mysterious Mrs. E. who is not what she appeared to be at the beginning. In a final series of coincidences which seem to be orchestrated by some magical force, Caroline is united with her spirit guide, and Edward and Caroline are reconciled in a new understanding and acceptance of natures great mysteries.
